24 June-8 July 2011. This exhibition displays and sells the Makonde woodcarvings, which are the most famous art works produced by the Makonde people in Southern Tanzania. The used material is the African blackwood, the so called mpingo.
The carvings are both traditional and contemporary as they mix the influence of a tribal past with traces of their modern response to urban life. Most of these works are inspired by tribal myths and stories. Very common are the animal statuettes and the demon-faced ceremonial masks.
