Thursday Films in May

5-26 May 2011. Goethe Institute organises a rich programme of screenings of German movies as part of the series Thursday Films.

On 5 May there is a screening of the German feature movie Cherry Blossoms – Hanami directed by Doris Dörrie. It tells the story of Rudi (Elmar Wepper), who isn’t aware he has cancer and that only has a few weeks left to live. The only one who was informed of the diagnosis by the doctor is Rudi’s vivacious, esoteric wife Trudi (Hannelore Elsner). Trudi organizes a last holiday to the Baltic coast with Rudi, but as soon as they arrive the wife suddenly dies. Rudi fulfils her lifelong dream of visiting Japan and seeing Mount Fuji.

On 12 May on screen will be the feature film and literary adaption A Year Ago in Winter by Caroline Link. The interior designer Eliane Richter asks the painter Max Hollander to paint a portray of her two children from a photograph. Her daughter Lilli is not keen on this idea, because her brother Alexander committed suicide and she believes that their portrait would be a simple decorative illusion. Finally this project ends up changing everyone directly and indirectly involved with the painting.

On 19 May there is a projection of Sonnenallee by Leander Haußmann. This movie emerges viewers in the times of the GDR (German Demcratic Republic) and offers a sentimental and fabulously exaggerated portrayal of its young people and its forbidden music and dances.

On 26 May it is Anna´s Summer by Jeanine Meerapfel. It tells the story of the 50-year old photo-journalist Anna, who arrives on the small Greek island Symi. Anna doesn’t know that this journey will change her life forever. In fact, being confronted with her past Anne will start experiencing her present in a new way.
