Mainland Tanzania celebrates five decades of independence on 9 December with a series of events in Dar es Salaam and the other major cities.
The national flag will be hoisted on the summit of Kilimanjaro after a marathon relay involving nearly 100 athletes from Arusha, Dodoma, Dar es Salaam and Mwanza. The flame was lit on 14 October in Butiama in the north-western Mara region, the birthplace of the country’s first president Julius Nyerere, and reached Moshi at the foot of Kilimanjaro on 1 December, ready for the climb to the summit.
Celebrations start in Dar es Salaam on 8 December and the culminating ceremony is in Uhuru Stadium on 9 December with a military parade and a mass display involving school children, musicians and dancers from all over the country.
Security has been stepped up for the 14 visiting heads of state and government.
