E-government launched in Dar es Salaam

The Tanzanian government has launched an electronic programme known as e-government to train civil servants in Information Communication Technology (ICT). The announcement was made during the sixth international conference on ICT for development education and training, held recently in Dar es Salaam.

Senior figures in government departments were among the first to enrol in public finance management training at the Tanzania Global Development Training Centre (TGDLC) and so far about 200 executives are registered. They will soon be joined by all data processing, financial and human resource officers from national, regional and district levels. The up-skilling is part of the phased introduction of an integrated online delivery of public services and follows the government’s commitment to deliver the National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB).

The digitised system is designed to increase efficiency and transparency, combat corruption and improve the country’s potential for inward investment. Dickson Mwanyika from TCDLC has suggested that the government should also consider introducing the m-government system, which involves citizens being notified or contacted via an SMS text messaging service.
